Shadrach Howie, 21, was arrested Sept. 3 at the end of an incident that started about 11:30 p.m. Sept. 2, when law enforcement responded to a report a reckless driver in Rapid Valley. Trooper Kevin Kinney stopped the driver, and the two occupants of the suspect's white Ford pickup fled on foot into a field, according to law enforcement reports. The two men were later identified as Howie and David Earl Scott, 22, New Underwood, who told officers he was getting married the next day and that Howie was his best man. What followed, according to law enforcement reports, included Howie and Scott driving a four-wheeler towards an officer who sought safety in his patrol car, Scott trying but failing to pull Howie out of another patrol car and Howie slamming a car door into Kinney's knee. According to a Highway Patrol news release, Kinney fractured his left knee and will be on extended sick leave. Capt. Greg Ingemunson said last week that Kinney might be able to return to duty in another month. Howie is charged with three felonies — two counts of aggravated assault and one attempted grand theft — and with three misdemeanors — driving under the influence, resisting arrest and obstructing law enforcement officers. The latter two charges are alternative counts, so Howie can be convicted of only one. Howie, who posted bond, will appear next at a status hearing Nov. 21. If convicted of all charges, Howie could face 37 years in prison and jail and $37,000 in combined fines. Scott was charged with DUI, a misdemeanor, according to information provided by the Pennington County State's Attorney's Office. Further information about Scott's current legal status was not available Monday. This is cache, read story here login to post comments |
