A longtime San Francisco dentist was shot and killed on his way to work in Russian Hill on Thursday morning by a former patient who then turned the gun on himself, police said.
Police investigators and witnesses said David Gong, 56, parked his car in a garage under Lombard Sports on the corner of Jackson and Polk streets and was walking toward his dental office, located a block away, a little before 8 a.m. when the alleged assailant, identified as 44-year-old San Francisco resident Hailu Abje, approached him.
"A guy came in front of [Gong] and said ‘Do you remember me?'" said Jose Menendez, a cook at the Bell Tower Bar and Restaurant who said he witnessed the crime. "He didn't say nothing, and the other guy put a gun to his stomach and shot [him]."
