A Darlington man has been sentenced to nine years in prison after pleading guilty to drunken driving in a 2004 crash that killed another man.

Franklin McIver Suggs, 35, pleaded guilty Tuesday to felony DUI resulting in death, according to a release from Attorney General Henry McMaster. He could have been sentenced to a maximum of 25 years.

McMaster said Suggs was traveling at more than 100 mph when he wrecked his car, which ended upside down in a Florence County ditch full of water. Suggs climbed out of the vehicle and walked to a pay phone, where he called his wife to pick him up.

Suggs called police to report the incident more than three hours later, prosecutors said.

Passenger Robbie Mooring, 26, was found dead in the vehicle.

Suggs was arrested and his blood-alcohol level was 0.11 percent - still above the legal limit for driving - hours after the wreck, McMaster said.
